The Fort LaTour Project:

Uncovering Our Storied Past

Lorne Middle School thankfully acknowledges the support of School Net Grassroots Project Funding.

Introduction

The site of Fort La Tour, an insignificant green mound overlooking Saint John Harbour, hides a rich narrative history full of  courage, loyalty, self sacrifice, political intrigue, deadly skirmishes, betrayal , romance and mystery. It is this history that we wish to explore, unravel and highlight in this project.

The fort site also marks the spot where the river, named St. John by Samuel de Champlain in honour of St. John the Baptist day in 1604, meets the waters of the Bay of Fundy in Saint John Harbour. The LaTour Project also celebrates the 400th Anniversary of Champlain's visit.

Each of the eight component projects reveals some aspect of the fascinating story of  Fort La Tour. Click on one of the lettered sections of the fort drawing below to uncover  a fascinating part of the story behind this remarkable National Historic Site.
